"By the law of progeniture, Capt. John Syme at the death of his mother, Mildred Meriwether, became possessed of her immense estate, but which by the cooperation of his father and Patrick Henry and his yielding and accommodating disposition, he was induced to sign away to his father, Col. John Syme, for a very inadequate consideration. It happened that his father, Col. John Syme, had sustained some heavy losses in aid of the Revolutionary War in an official capacity, and not having it in his power to meet the demands against him, he most unrighteously undertook to make sale of his son's, Capt. John Syme's, vast landed estate before his son, Capt. John Syme, became of mature age. Entering into covenant bonds to those to whom he had sold his son's property, with Patrick Henry and one John Hawkins as his securities, that his son, Capt. John Syme, on his arriving at mature age would ratify & make good all the sales he had made. The interposition of numerous friends was exercised to prevent Capt. John Syme from ratiffing or fulfilling his father's, Col. John Syme's, sales of his immense property during his minority, but the persuasive powers of Patrick Henry over him, and he was induced to yield up his vast claims & remained possessed of moderate fortune." - Dr. William COCHRAN, 17 November 1841

3481 The 1091 acres were located among the branches of Mehixon Creek in the Pamunkey Neck, which became King William County in 1702. 3482 The 1900 US Census states that Maria had born 8 children with 6 living at that time. The 8th child that was born and died before 1900 has not been identified yet. The events may have occurred in England before their immigration to the United States in 1879. - W. Winston COCHRANE IV, 2013 Family: EYRE, John Henry / BAGHURST, Maria (F525)

3483 The Anthony who died between 1715-1719 left orphans. This fits William Sr.'s son, born before 1680, at a marrying age of +21 in 1701 when he owned land, and about 40 or more when he died. I assume he married circa 1700. Therefore, the Anthony who died in Dec 1725, "a young man", fits as Anthony Sr.'s son, Anthony Jr., who would have been born circa 1702 and died at about age 23 in 1725. If Anthony Jr. had died circa 1718 at about 16 years old, he most likely would not have left orphans. - W. Winston COCHRANE IV WINSTON, Anthony Jr. (I2477)

3484 The Atchison and Nebraska Railroad was described in the Atchison City Directory for 1878:

"Is one of the most important lines radiating from this city. Its general course is northwest, and its terminus at Lincoln, the capital of Nebraska. . . . The Atchison and Nebraska is one of the most important, and has always been one of the most popular, roads in the west."
COCHRANE, Dr. William Winston Sr. (I16)

3485 The birth dates for Mildred Meriwether Garland and Mildred Cochran Garland are in question, as they are reversed between The Cochran(e) Family Bible and The Cochrane Family History Book. Although the order of entry in the Bible indicates Mildred Cochran was born first in 1843, the entry for her death in 1872 at age 27 indicates she was born in 1845. Also, the year for Mildred Meriwether was changed at a later date in the Bible to 1845, and the Bible entry for Mildred Meriwether's death (1844) is before the changed entry for her birth. I am using the birth dates in The Cochrane Family History Book for both Mildred's as they make more sense, until I find other conflicting evidence. - W.
