Along with the three Doughty brothers, he enlisted in the Kentucky 7th Volunteer Infantry Regiment for 3 years on 26 Aug 1861 in London, KY at age 26, and was enrolled into Company K. This regiment was organized at Camp Dick Robinson (KY) on 22 Sep 1861, and had its first engagement in Laurel County in the Battle of Camp Wildcat (KY), 21 Oct 1861.
The regiment fought in the following major engagements during 1862 and 1863: Battle of Richmond (KY), 29-30 Aug 1862; Battle of Perryville (KY), 8 Oct 1862; Battle of Chickasaw Bayou (MS), 26-29 Dec 1862; Battle of Arkansas Post (AR), 9-11 Jan 1863; Battle of Port Gibson (MS), 1 May 1863; Battle of Jackson (MS), 14 May 1863; Battle of Champion Hill (MS), 16 May 1863; Battle of Big Black River Bridge (MS), 17 May 1863; and the Attacks and Siege of Vicksburg (MS), 18 May - 4 Jul 1863.
He died in a Union hospital at Milliken's Bend in Madison Parish, Louisiana, on the Mississippi River about 15 miles upstream from Vicksburg, Mississippi, on the same day the Siege of Vicksburg ended with the Confederate surrender.
