Closer to home Melton served as a Santa Paula Union High School Trustee, Blanchard Community Library Trustee, President of the Santa Paula Chamber of Commerce, Santa Paula Housing Authority Commissioner, Assistant Scoutmaster/Troop Committee Chairman, Little League Coach, Rotary Club of Santa Paula and Costa Mesa (he was president of the latter) and the Masonic Lodge No. 19 of Olathe, Kansas."  - Obituary, Santa Paula Times, 6 October 2004
