[6, 7, 8, 9] from Scotland - A deed for land in Henrico County, dated 1 August 1715, was given to Elizabeth GEDDES BOBBY, the daughter of John GEDDES and wife of Thomas BOBBY [Jr.], and was witnessed by John SYME [I]. About 10 years later, John GEDDES' widow would become John SYME I's first wife.

Relationship with McKENZIE unknown, but Elizabeth was married to Thomas BOBBY Jr. at the time. The deed was witnessed by John SYME I.

[10, 11] as the Surveyor - On 16 January 1717, the minutes of the Council of Colonial Virginia record the following: "Mr. John Syme [I] having been presented in behalf of the Trustees of the Colledge [sic] [of William and Mary] as a fitt [sic] Person to execute the Office of Surveyor of New Kent County was this day approved by the Governor and Council if upon Examination by the Surveyor Gen1 he be found duly qualifyed [sic] for that Office."
He was also appointed Surveyor in Hanover County when it was created in 1720, and was reappointed in 1726 for both counties. He served in these positions at least through 1729.

[12, 13, 14] by the Governor of Virginia as one of ten Justices of Peace for the new County of Hanover - Six years later, on 14 June 1727, the minutes of the Council of Colonial Virginia record the following. It is unknown as to what precipitated this event, or if the Justices carried through with their threat.
"On reading at this Board a letter to the President from six of the Justices of the County of Hannover [sic] desiring that they may be excused from sitting as Justices of the peace while Mr. John Syme [I] is continued in that Commission [sic], It is the opinion of this Board and accordingly ordered that the Clerk of the Council do write to the said Justices intimating to them that this Board being well satisfied of Mr. Syme's affection and loyalty to his Mat [Majesty's] person and Government, as well as of his capacity & qualifications to serve the County as a Justice of the peace, they do not think fit to remove him from that office"

- On 9 July 1724 received a grant for 4,600 acres in Hanover County on the south side of the South Anna River, and both sides of the Little River and some branches of Owens Creek [current eastern Louisa County].
- On 9 December 1724 received a grant with George Alves for 4,000 acres in Hanover County on Deep Creek and Fork Creek.
- On 9 December 1724 treceived a grant for 1000 acres in Hanover County on the branches of Owens Creek.
- On 29 April 1725 received a grant for 4,600 acres in Hanover County on Little Creek and Owens Creek.
- On 17 August 1725 received a grant for 400 acres in Hanover County on the south side of the South Anna River at the mouth of Horseshoe Neck [current southeastern Louisa County].
- On 15 December 1725 received a portion of 5000 acres in Henrico County, along with Isaac WINSTON and 3 others. Said acres joining the county line where it crosses Deep Creek and Fork Creek (which run into the Pamunkey River) and extending to the head of said creeks [currently in northwestern Goochland County along I-64 between exits 148 and 152].
- on 8 February 1727 received a portion of 6000 acres along with 3 others, located on the branches of the River Byrd in Hanover County, adjoining land previously granted to him.
- On 24 February 1729 received a grant for 400 acres in Hanover County on both sides of Beaverdam Creek [near current Beaverdam, VA].
- On 28 September 1730 received 3 grants: (1) for 5820 acres in Hanover County on both sides of Deep Creek, Fork Creek and Little Creek, adjoining Capt. David Meriwether's land, Capt. Clark's land and the dividing line between Goochland and Hanover Counties [currently near South Anna, VA in Louisa County]; (2) for 5629 acres in Hanover County on the south side of the South Anna River; and (3) for 3400 acres in Goochland County on Lickinghole Creek and Deep Creek [near Hadensville, VA].
- On 25 August 1731 received 2 grants: (1) for 1,900 acres in Hanover County on the south side of the North Anna River and both sides of Gold Mine Creek and Hickory Creek [near Ellisville, Louisa County, VA]; and (2) for 4050 acres in Hanover County on both sides of Gold Mine Creek adjacent to Col. Meriwether [near Louisa, Louisa County, VA].
- On 17 September 1731 received a grant for 4,050 acres in Hanover County on Gold Mine Creek [near Louisa, Louisa County, VA].

"Archeological excavations and surviving insurance maps for Studley show that by 1796 the main 40-by-30-foot brick structure stood two stories high with one-story brick wing and an attached porch. It was surrounded by a variety of outbuildings including a kitchen, dairy, study, stables, barn and granary. The house burned in 1807." - The Road to Revolution Heritage Trail, Marker No. 1
The remnants of the house foundation are located in a grove of trees approximately 75 yards southeast of the Studley historical marker. [33] John SYME's widow, Sarah WINSTON SYME, successfully petitioned the Council of Colonial Virginia - She ask to recover costs incurred during John's surveying trip for the Colony, during which he died. The Council recommended that the Justices of Hanover County determine an appropriate amount to be paid to Sarah by Hanover County. John had been ordered to survey the common county line between Hanover and Goochland counties.

The purpose of this lawsuit was to recover property from the HENRYs that was inherited by Rebecca and her sister, Elizabeth, from their Grandfather, John GEDDES Jr., based on his Will of 18 May 1719 in James City County. The Will stated his wife, Margaret (DANSIE) GEDDES, was to have use of, during her life, his plantations at Totero Fort and Sandy Point and the household goods, cattle and slaves at thoses plantations. After her death, his estate was to be split up between his daughter, Elizabeth (GEDDES) BOBBY and her children. Elizabeth had two sons who died before her in 1722 and 1727.
