  	Having moved from Maryland, they settled just upstream from the famous Mendota bend (36°41'54" N, 082°18'59" W) in the river, between the southeast side of Clinch Mountain and the river, where they farmed. They acquired 572 acres over the next 2 years adjacent to their son-in-law, John Benham, husband of their daughter Mary.
