Notes:
1801 - Clarke County was formed from portions of Jackson County and Greene County in Georgia, USA. The town of Athens was formed as the county seat of Clarke County.

1811 - Madison County formed from portions of Clarke County, Elbert County, Franklin County, Jackson County and Oglethrope County.

1875 - Oconee County formed from a portion of Clarke County, creating Clarke County's present day boundries.

1991 - The City of Athens and Clarke County formed one combined government, named Athens-Clarke County.
