Notes:
1614 - The Dutch began building forts in New Netherlands, which covered the future states of New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut, and parts of Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

1664 - England took control of New Netherlands.

1673 - The Dutch re-took control of New Netherlands, and established three counties on the present day Delaware River: Upland County in present day Pennsylvania, and New Amstel County and Hoarkill County, both in present day Delaware.

1674 - The Dutch ceded New Netherlands back to the English. New Amstel County's name changed to New Castle County.

1680 - St. Jones County formed from portions of New Castle County and Hoarkill County.

1681 - On 28 February, Charles II of England granted a land charter to William Penn and named it the Pennsylvania Colony. Upland County established by the Dutch was now in Pennsylvania, and was renamed Chester County. The three counties in present day Delaware were called the Lower Counties on the Delaware.

1682 - St. Jones County's name changed to Kent County.

1683 - The town of Dover was established in Kent County, and became the county seat.

1707 - England became part of the UK.

1760 - The Delaware-Maryland border was defined.

1776 - On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress.

1777 - Dover became the capital of Delaware.

1779 - On 1 February, Delaware was the 12th state to ratify the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America.

1787 - On 7 December, Delaware became the 1st state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America.
