Notes:
1776 - On 29 June, Virginia became the Commonwealth of Virginia with its own Constitution, independent from the UK. On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress.

1777 - On 16 December, Virginia was the first state to ratify the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America.

1777 - Kentucky County was formed from a portion of Fincastle County, Virginia.

1780 - Kentucky County was divided into Fayette County, Jefferson County and Lincoln County, and Kentucky County became extinct.

1786 - Bourbon County formed from a portion of Fayette County.

1788 - On 25 June, Virginia became the 10th state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America.

1789 - Woodford County formed from a portion of Fayette County.

1792 - On June 1, the Commonwealth of Kentucky became the 15th state in the United States of America, with the following nine counties that were formerly in Virginia: Bourbon, Fayette, Jefferson, Lincoln, Madison, Mason, Mercer, Nelson and Woodford.

1793 - Clark County formed from portions of Fayette County and Bourbon County.

1799 - Jessamine County formed from a portion of Fayette County, creating Fayette County's present day boundries.

1974 - The governments and territory of the city of Lexington and Fayette County were formally merged together on January 1.
