Notes:
1776 - On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress. In November, North Carolina created a state constitution. On 12 November, the Washington District of North Carolina was formed.

1777 - Washington County (NC) was formed from a portion of the Washington District.

1778 - On 5 April, North Carolina was the 10th state to ratify the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America.

1783 - Greene County (NC) was formed from Washington County (NC).

1784 - On 2 June, North Carolina ceded its Western Territory to the Federal Government. On 23 August, Washington County, Greene County and Sullivan County formed the provisional State of Franklin. In November, North Carolina repealed cession of the Western Territory to the Federal Government.

1785 - Caswell County and Sevier County both formed from portions of Greene County and Indian Lands. Also, Spencer County formed from portions of Greene County and Sullivan County.

1786 - North Carolina reconstitutes its governments in Greene County, Sullivan County and Washington County, which function in parallel with the State of Franklin governments in those counties.

1788 - North Carolina gained supremacy over the State of Franklin. Franklin and it's counties of Caswell, Blount, Sevier, Spencer and Wayne became extinct.

1789 - On 21 November, North Carolina became the 12th state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America.

1790 - On 26 May, North Carolina again ceded the Western Territory to the Federal Government. The United States Congress established a territorial government called "Territory of the United States South of the River Ohio", better known as the Southwest Territory. It was essentially the land area that later became the State Tennessee.

1792 - Jefferson County formed from portions of Greene County and Hawkins County.

1793 - Jefferson County received land from Greene County.

1796 - On 1 June, Tennessee became the 16th state in the United States of America, with the 11 counties that were in the Southwest Territory.

1797 - Cocke county formed from portions of Greene County and Jefferson County.

1799 - Cocke County received land from Greene County.

1806 - Hawkins County received land from Greene County, creating Greene County's present day boundries.
