Notes:
1819 - Harlan County was formed from a portion of Knox County, Kentucky, USA. The county seat at that time was named Mount Pleasant.

1820 - Harland County exchanged land with Knox County.

1828 - The county seat of Mount PLeasant was renamed Harlan Court House.

1838 - Knox County received land from Harlan County.

1841 - Harlan received land from Perry County.

1842 - Letcher County formed from portions of Harlan County and Perry County.

1852 - Harlan County received land from Clay County.

1865 - The county seat of Harlan Court House was renamed Harlan.

1867 - Josh Bell County formed from portions of Harlan County and Knox County, creating Harlan County's present day boundries.

1884 - The county seat of Harlan was renamed and incorporated as Mount Pleasant.

1912 - The county seat of Mount Pleasant was renamed again and incorporated as Harlan.
