Notes:
1864 - The Montana Territory created from portions of the Idhao Territory.
1865 - Edgerton County becomes one of the original 9 counties in the Montana Territory, receiving land from Choteau County.
1864 - The town of Helena was formed from a gold rush community.
1867 - Edgerton County exchanged land with Jefferson County, and received land from Deer Lodge County.
1868 - Edgerton County renamed Lewis and Clark County, and Helena became the county seat of Lewis and Clark County.
1875 - Helena became the Capital of the Montana Territory.
1887 - Cascade County formed from portions of Lewis and Clark County, Chouteau County and Meagher County.
1889 - On 8 November Montana became the 41st state in the United States of America, and Helena became the state Capital.
1897 - Lewis and Clark County received land from Meagher County and Cascade County.
1899 - Lewis and Clark County received land from Deer Lodge County.
1903 - Powell County received land from Lewis and Clark County, creating Lewis and Clark County's present day boundries.
