Notes:
1798 - The Mississippi Territory was established by the USA, which included the southern portions of present day Mississippi and Alabama.

1804 - The Mississippi Territory was trippled by expansion northward to the southern Tennessee border.

1805 - The town of Huntsville was established. It was incorporated in 1811.

1808 - Madison County was established from Indian lands in the Mississippi Teritory, with Huntsville as the county seat.

1812 - The Mississippi Territory annexed land to the Gulf Coast.

1817 - On 3 March, the Alabama Territory was established from the eastern half of the Mississippi Territory, including Madison County and Huntsville.

1819 - On 14 December, Alabama became the 22nd state in the United States of America. Huntsville became the state capitol of Alabama for a year until it was moved.

1819 - Madison County received land from an unorganized area.

1837 - Marshall County received land from Madison County, creating Madison County's present day boundries.
