Notes:
1789 - Kanawha County was formed from portions of Greenbrier County and Montgomery County.
1804 - Mason County formed from a portion of Kanawha County.
1809 - Cabell County fromed from a portion of Kanawha County.
1818 - Nicholas County formed from portions of Kanawha County and Greenbrier County.
1824 - Logan County formed from portions of Kanawha County, Cabell County and Giles County.
1820-30 - Nicholas County received portions of Kanawha County and Lewis County.
1831 - Fayette County formed from portions of Kanawha County, Greenbrier County and Logan County. Jackson County formed from portions of Kanawha County, Mason County and Wood County.
1836 - Braxton County formed from portions of Kanawha County, Lewis County and Nicholas County.
1845 - Gilmer County formed from portions of Kanawha County and Lewis County.
1847 - Boone County formed from portions of Kanawha County, Cabell County and Logan County.
1848 - Putnam County formed from portions of Kanawha County, Cabell County and Mason County.
1840-50 - Braxton County received portions of Kanawha County and Lewis County.
1856 - Roane County formed from portions of Kanawha County, Gilmer County, Jackson County and Wirt County.
1863 - During the US Civil War, an area of western Virginia, including Kanawha County and all the other counties listed above, that sided with the North as opposed to Virginia, applied to Congress for admission into the Union as a separate state from Virginia. Congress approved the request with one condition, that the new state abolish slavery. President Lincoln signed the West Virginia statehood bill and on June 20, 1863, West Virginia became a state in the United States of America.
1867 - Lincoln County formed from portions of Kanawha County, Boone County, Cabell County and Logan County, creating Kanawha County's present day boundries in West Virginia, USA.
