Notes:
1803 - The United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France, which included most of present day Kansas.

1812 - After Louisiana became a state, the remaining territory of the Louisiana Purchase was renamed the Missouri Territory.

1821 - After Missouri became a state, the remainder of the Missouri Territory became an unorganized territory.

1848 - At the end of the Mexican-American War, the United States acquired northern Mexico, which included southwestern portion of present day Kansas.

1854 - The Kansas Territory was created.

1861 - On 29 January, Kansas became the 34th state in the United States of America.
