Notes:
1803 - The United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France, which included present day northeastern Colorado.

1848 - At the end of the Mexican-American War, the United States acquired northern Mexico, which included southern and western present day Colorado.

1854 - The Kansas Territory was established, which extended into present day east central Colorado.

1859 - Middle Kiowa was founded in Oro County in the Kansas Territory.

1861 - The Territory of Colorado was organized, and Douglas County became an original county which included Middle Kiowa.

1874 - Elbert County was formed from portions of Douglas County and Greenwood County, and Middle Kiowa became the county seat of Elbert County.

1876 - On 1 August, Colorado became the 38th state in the United States of America.

1912 - Middle Kiowa was renamed Kiowa and incorporated.
