Notes:
1864 - The Montana Territory was formed from a portion of the Idaho Territory, USA. Choteau County and Gallatin County were among the original counties in the Montana Territory.

1867 - Meagher County was formed from portions of Choteau County and Gallatin County.

1879 - The city of Lewistown was established in Meagher County.

1885 - Fergus County was formed from a portion of Meagher County, and Lewistown became the county seat for Fergus County.

1889 - On 8 November, Montana became the 41st state in the United States of America.
