Notes:
1776 - On 29 June, Virginia became the Commonwealth of Virginia with its own Constitution, independent from the UK. On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress.

1777 - On 16 December, Virginia was the first state to ratify the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America.

1777 - Kentucky County was formed from a portion of Fincastle County, Virginia.

1780 - Kentucky County was divided into Fayette County, Jefferson County and Lincoln County, and Kentucky County became extinct.

1786 - Madison County and Mercer County were both formed from portions of Lincoln County.

1788 - On 25 June, Virginia became the 10th state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America.

1792 - On June 1, the Commonwealth of Kentucky became the 15th state in the United States of America, with the following nine counties that were formerly in Virginia: Bourbon, Fayette, Jefferson, Lincoln, Madison, Mason, Mercer, Nelson and Woodford.

1792 - Logan County formed from a portion of Lincoln County.

1793 - Green County formed from portions of Lincoln County and Nelson County.

1797 - Garrard County formed from portions of Lincoln County, Madison County and Mercer County.

1799 - Pulaski County formed from portions of Lincoln County and Green County.

1800 - Knox County formed from a portion of Lincoln County.

1801 - Garrard County received land from Lincoln County.

1807 - Casey County fromed from a portion of Lincoln County.

1808 - Lincoln County received land from Casey County.

1810 - Rockcastle County formed from portions of Lincoln County, Knox County, Madison County and Pulaski County.

1842 - Boyle County formed from portions of Lincoln County and Mercer County, creating Lincoln County's present day boundries.
