Notes:
1763 - Great Britian takes control of the territory east of the Mississippi River.

1776 - On 29 June, Virginia became the Commonwealth of Virginia with its own Constitution, independent from Great Britain. On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress.

1778 - Virginia claimed present day Illinois as a county of Virginia.

1783 - Virginia ceded Illinois to the Federal Government, and it became part of the Northwest Territory.

1800 - The Indiana Territory was formed from the Northwest Territory.

1809 - The Illinois Territory was organized from the Indiana Territory.

1812 - Madison County was formed from portions of St. Clair County and Randolph County in the Illinois Territory, USA.

1814 - Edwards County was formed from portions of Madison County and Gallatin County.

1817 - Bond County was formed from portions of Madison County, Crawford County and Edwards County.

1818 - On 3 December, Illinois became the 21st state in the United States of America.

1821 - Greene County was formed from a portion of Madison County, and Montgomery County was formed from portions of Madison County and Bond County, and Pike County was formed from portions of Madison County, Bond County and Clark County, and Sangamond County was formed from portions of Madison County and Bond County.

1843 - Bond County received land from Madison County, creating Madison County's present day boundries.
