Notes:
1776 - On 29 June, Virginia became the Commonwealth of Virginia with its own Constitution, independent from Great Britain. On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress.

1777 - On 16 December, Virginia was the first state to ratify the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America.

1777 - Kentucky County was formed from a portion of Fincastle County, Virginia.

1780 - Kentucky County was divided into Fayette County, Jefferson County and Lincoln County, and Kentucky County became extinct.

1786 - Madison County and Mercer County were both formed from portions of Lincoln County.

1788 - On 25 June, Virginia became the 10th state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America.

1792 - On June 1, the Commonwealth of Kentucky became the 15th state in the United States of America, with the following nine counties that were formerly in Virginia: Bourbon, Fayette, Jefferson, Lincoln, Madison, Mason, Mercer, Nelson and Woodford.

1797 - Garrard County formed from portions of Madison County, Lincoln County and Mercer County.

1800 - Garrard County received land from Madison County, and Madison County received land from Montgomery County.

1805 - Knox County received land from Madison County.

1807 - Clay County formed from portions of Madison County, Floyd County and Knox County. Floyd County and Knox County both received land from Madison County.

1808 - Estill County formed from portions of Madison County and Clark County.

1810 - Rockcastle County formed from portions of Madison County, Knox County, Pulaski County and Lincoln County.

1812 - Madison County received land from Clay County.

1821 - Rockcastle County received land from Madison County.

1858 - Jackson County formed from portions of Madison County, Rockcastle County and Owsley County, creating Madison County's present day boundries.
