Notes:
1776 - On 29 June, Virginia became the Commonwealth of Virginia with its own Constitution, independent from the UK. On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress.
1777 - On 16 December, Virginia was the first state to ratify the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America.
1777 - Montgomery County was formed from a portion of Fincastle County in Virginia, USA, when Fincastle County became extinct.
1778 - Greenbrier County formed from portions of Montgomery County and Botetourt County.
1788 - On 25 June, Virginia became the 10th state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America.
1789 - Kanawha County formed from portions of Montgomery County and Greenbrier County.
1790 - Wythe Couny formed from a portion of Montgomery County.
1806 - Giles County formed from portions of Montgomery County, Monroe County and Tazwell County.
1831 - Floyd County fromed from a portion of Montgomery County.
1839 - Pulaski County formed from portions of Montgomery County and Wythe County.
1840-50 - Roane County received a portion of Montgomery County.
1892 - Radford was incorporated as a city separte from Montgomery County, creating Montgomery County's present day boundries.
