1614 - The Dutch began building forts in New Netherlands, which covered the future states of New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut, and parts of Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

1664 - England took control of New Netherlands, and remaned it the Province of New York.

1668 - The Duke of York granted the territory, present day New Jersey, to Sir George Carteret and John Berkerley, separating it from the Province of New York. It was named the Province of New Jersey.

1674 - The Province of New Jersey was divided into two territories, East Jersey and West Jersey.

1675 - The 4 original counties of East Jersey were: Bergen, Essex, Middlesex and Monouth.

1681 - The 2 original counties of East Jersey were: Burlington and Salem.

1707 - On 17 April, East and West Jersey were combined into a royal colony, the Province of New Jersey. On 1 May, England became a part of the UK.

1777 - On 2 July, New Jersey became an independent state when they created a state constitution.

1776 - On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress.

1778 - On 19 November, New Jersey was the 11th state to ratify the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America.

1787 - On 18 December, New Jersey became the 3rd state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America.
