1682 - French Louisiana was a district of New France

1718 - The city of New Orleans was founded.

1763 - The French colony of New France was ceded to Spain.

1800 - Spain returned the territory to France.

1803 - The United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France, and the area was divided into two territories: The Territory of Orleans which became the state of Louisiana, and the District of Louisiana, which was the remainder of the Louisiania Purchase.

1812 - On 30 April, Louisiana became the 18th state in the United States of America, and the District of Louisiana was renamed the Missouri Territory.
