Notes:
Capt. David CRAWFORD, Sr. [3725] gave 400 acres of his "Assasquin" plantation to his grandson, Col. William MERIWETHER, Sr. [212] in April 1693. In 1738, MERIWETHER laid out 40 of these acres on the Pumunkey River for 52 half-acre lots for a town he named Newcastle. It was surveyed by Col. John HENRY [287]. The town became extinct circa 1811, and there are no remnents.

Location based on directions given by Art Taylor, President of the Hanover County (VA) Historical Society, in an email 4 Aug 2010 to WWC IV: "The best way to give you a point of reference is to have you follow River Road (Rte. 605) south and southeast to its end at the stop sign at Mechanicsville Turnpike (Route 360). Look straight ahead across Mechanicsville Turnpike and across the field(s) toward the Pamunkey River, the site is located in that area. There is nothing left of the Town, etc. The following link should give you a map and the VA Dept. of Historic Resources website for the marker info: <http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/hiway_markers/hwmarker_results.cfm?searchType=keyword&queryParam=Newcastle>"
