Notes:
1770 - Spain established missions in Alta California, New Spain, which is present day California. The first mission was San Diego.

1821 - Mexico achieved independence from Spain, and Alta California became a territory of Mexico.

1848 - At the end of the Mexican-American War, the United States acquired northern Mexico, including present day California.

1850 - On 9 September, California became the 31st state in the United States of America. San Deigo County was formed, and the City of San Diego became the county seat of San Diego County.
