1770 - Spain established missions in Alta California, New Spain, which is present day California.

1776 - The city of San Francisco was first established with a mission by the Spanish in Alta California.

1821 - Mexico achieved independence from Spain, and Alta California became a territory of Mexico.

1848 - At the end of the Mexican-American War, the United States acquired northern Mexico, including present day California.

1850 - On 9 September, California became the 31st state in the United States of America, and San Francisco County was formed.

1856 - San Mateo County was formed from the southern portion of San Francisco County, and the remaing portion of San Francisco County was merged with the City of San Francisco to become a city-county.
