Notes:
1663 - A charter was issued to eight English noblemen for the Province of Carolina, England.

1707 - On 1 May, England became a part of the UK.

1712 - The Province of Carolina was split into the Province of North Carolina and the Province of South Carolina.

1776 - On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress. In November, North Carolina created a state constitution.

1776 - The Washington District of Norh Carolina formed.

1777 - Washington County was formed from the Washington District.

1778 - On 5 April, North Carolina was the 10th state to ratify the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America.

1779 - Sullivan County was formed from a portion of Washington County.

1783 - Greene County and Davidson County were both formed from portions of Washington County.

1784 - On 2 June, North Carolina cedes the Washington district to the United States. On 23 August, Greene County, Washington County and Sullivan County, all in the former Washington District of North Carolina, form the provisional State of Franklin. In November, North Carolina repeals cession of the Washington District to the United States.

1785-1787 - The State of Franklin reaches a total of seven counties by forming new counties.

1786 - North Carolina reconstitutes its governments in Greene County, Sullivan County and Washington County, which function in parallel with the State of Franklin governments in those counties.

1787 - North Carolina's county governments gain supremacy over the State of Franklin's government.

1789 - On 21 November, North Carolina became the 12th state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America.

1790 - On 26 May, North Carolina cedes back to the United States the Western District, and the United States Congress establishes a territorial government called the "Territory of the United States South of the River Ohio", which includes Washington County.

1796 - On 1 June, Tennessee is admitted to the United States of America as a state. Also, Carter County formed from a portion of Washington County.

1870 - Washington County received land from Sullivan County.

1875 - Unicoi County formed from portions of Washington County and Carter County, creating Washington County's present day boundries.
