Notes:
1863 - During the US Civil War, an area of western Virginia, including Hancock County, that sided with the North as opposed to Virginia, applied to Congress for admission into the Union as a separate state from Virginia. Congress approved the request with one condition, that the new state abolish slavery. President Lincoln signed the West Virginia statehood bill and on June 20, 1863, West Virginia became a state in the United States of America.
