Notes:
During the US Civil War, an area of western Virginia that sided with the North as opposed to Virginia, applied to Congress for admission into the Union as a separate state from Virginia. Congress approved the request with one condition, that the new state abolish slavery. President Lincoln signed the West Virginia statehood bill and on June 20, 1863, West Virginia became the 35th state in the United States of America. At that time, West Virginia was composed of 50 counties that were formerly in Virginia. After statehood, West Virginia created 5 new counties from portions of the original 50 countires: Grant County and Mineral County in 1866, Lincpoln County in 1867, Sommers County in 1871 and Mingo County in 1895.
