1644 - The independent Colony of Rhode Island was formed by Providence, Portsmouth and Newport.
1669 - Westerly was founded in the Colony of Rhode Island.
1686 - The Dominion of New England was formed by England, which included all of New england and New York and New Jersey.
1689 - The Dominion of New England ceased to exist, and the Colony of Rhode Island was reinstated.
1703 - Providence Plantation was formed as an original county in the Colony of Rhode Island, which included the town of Westerly. Also, England became a part of Great Britian.
1729 - The county of Providence Plantation was renamed to Providence County, and Kings County was formed from a portion of Providence County, and it included the town of Westerly
1776 - On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress.
1778 - On 9 February, Rhode Island was the 4th state to ratify the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America.
1781 - Kings County was renamed Washington County.
1790 - On 29 May, Rhode Island became the 13th state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America.
