Notes:
1818 - Whitley County was formed from a portion of Knox County, Kentucky, USA. The town of Spring Ford was renamed Whitley Courthouse and it became the county seat of Whitley County.

1826 - Laurel County formed from portions of Whitley County, Clay County, Knox County and Rockcastle County. Whitley County received land from Pulaski County.

1871 - Josh Bell County (renamed Bell County in 1873) received land from Whitley County.

1876 - Laurel County received land from Whitley County.

1882 - Whitley Courthouse was renamed Williamsburg.

1912 - McCreary County formed from portions of Whitley County, Wayne County and Pulaski County, creating Whitley county's present day boundries.
