Notes:
1778 - Wilkes County was formed from a portion of Surry County, North Carolina, USA.

1785 - Wayne County in the newly created State of Franklin was formed from the western portion of Wilkes County.

1788 - The State of Franklin was disolved and its Wayne County returned to Wilkes County.

1789 - Wilkes County received land from Burke County.

1792 - Wilkes County received land from an unincorporated area that was formerly in a county called Washington.

1799 - Ashe County formed from a portion of Wilkes County.

1815 - Wilkes County received land from Iredell County.

1841 - Caldwell County formed from portions of Wilkes County and Burke County.

1847 - Alexander County formed from portions of Wilkes County, Caldwell County and Iredell County.

1849 - Watauga County formed from portions of Wilkes County, Ashe County, Caldwell County and Yancey County.

1891 - Alleghany County received land from Wilkes County, creating Wilkes County's present day boundries.
