The steamship Indiana was one of four similar ships owned by the American Steamship Company, a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Railroad. They brought immigrants from Europe to Philadelphia, so those immigrants could further travel on the railroad to Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. The SS Indiana operated from 1873 to 1909, primarily roundtrip from Philadelphia to Liverpool. In May 1877, two years before the BAGHURST family voyage, the SS Indiana took US President Grant from Philadelphia to Liverpool on the beginning of a very successful world tour.
