Story 1843 Woodford County, Kentucky, USA
[3] "Mollie" Stewart Taken by Her Aunt Margaret - Margaret HAMILTON, the sister of Mollie STEWART's mother, had promised her sister just before her death that she would take care of the newborn Mollie. After Margaret married Elias FLETCHER in 1843 at age 18, she wanted to raise Mollie, then 5, but the uncle Mollie was living with in Kentucky did not want to give her up.
Margaret arranged to take Mollie from her uncle and travel down the Kentucky River on a steamboat to visit other relatives for the day. On their return in the evening, Margaret ordered the boat not to stop at the wharf where the uncle was waiting for Mollie. Margaret then took Mollie to live with she and her husband in Palmyra, Missouri, raising her along with her own three children.

[3, 19] "Mollie" Stewart Meets Her Husband - Although Mollie was raised in Palmyra, Missouri by her mother's sister, Margaret Pickett HAMILTON FLETCHER, she returned to her native Kentucky to attend and graduate from the Georgetown Female Seminary in 1857. While there, she roomed with a Rebecca SCOTT. On a visit to the SCOTT home in Louisville, Kentucky, Mollie met a friend of the SCOTT family, Mildred COCHRANE. Mildred was making some white shirts for her brother, Dr. William Winston COCHRANE. Mildred told Mollie if she would make the button holes, she would give Mollie her brother. Mollie made the button holes.
Dr. COCHRANE heard a lot about Mollie from his sister, but when he visited Louisville from his home in Atchison, Kansas, Mollie was always at home in Palmyra. Finally he visited his brother Robert who was also living in Palmyra. Robert's wife was related to the aunt who raised Mollie. When they met, Dr. COCHRANE is reported to have said, "And this is the meteoric Mollie I have anticipated meeting for so long." They were married on 13 November 1862 in Palmyra, and settled in Atchison where they lived for the remainder of their lives.

"Lived Here 57 Years"
"Mrs. W. W. Cochrane Died Yesterday"
"Widow Of Early Physician"
"Her Great Grandfather Fought in Revolution, and Another Ancestor Was in War of 1812"
"Mrs. Mary Davis Stewart Cochrane, widow of Dr. W. W. Cochrane, and who had lived in Atchison 57 years, since 1862, died yesterday afternoonat 3:30 o'clock at her home, 316 North Third street, age 81.
"It was stated in The Globe last night that Mrs. Cochrane's death was expected momentarily. She had been unconscious since Saturday night at 11 o'clock, and had been in failing health for ten years.
"In caring for her daughter, Miss Mary Cochrane, who died in Colorado in 1909, Mrs. Cochrane contracted a cold, which resulted in complications and leaving her almost helpless. During the ten years of her invalidism she was tenderly nursed by her daughter, Dr. Catherine Smith, whose devotion was the comfort and joy of Mrs. Cochrane's declining years.
"One of Mrs. Cochrane's ancestors, Captain John Hamilton, an officer in the war of 1812; her great grandfather, Seneca McCracken, fought in the Revolution; her grandfather, Charles Stewart, was an honored member of the Kentucky legislature for many years.
"She was born May 9, 1838, on a farm near Versailles, Ky., and was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Davis Stewart. Her mother's maiden name was Mary Hamilton.
"Her parents died in her childhood, and she was reared by her aunt, Mrs. Fletcher Taylor, in Palmyra, Mo., and was educated at Georgetown, Ky., graduating in 1857. She identified herself with the Baptist church in 1857, and was a staunch member of the church throughout her life.
"On November 13, 1862, she became the wife of Dr. W. W. Cochrane, whose death occurred January 15, 1899, and who came to Atchison in 1859. For many years Dr. Cochrane was Atchison's leading physician. He was one of the first members of the Kansas Medical society, joining that body in 1862, and was its president from 1868 until to 1872.
"Five children were born to Dr. and Mrs. Cochrane and of them two survive: Dr. Catherine Smith, wife of Dr. John Ellsworth Smith, of Kansas City, and W. W. Cochrane, of Atchison. Two grandchildren survive, Miriam Margaret and William Winston, jr., the children of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Cochrane.
"The funeral will take place Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Baptist church, interment in Mt. Vernon cemetery. In the absence of the Rev. W. C. Chapman the services will be conducted by Rev. Garland Riggan, of Kansas City, and by the Rev. Edward Beauchamp, of Highland."

Notes - At age 75 she wrote the following about her life:
"She counted Atchison as the "dearest spot" and was ever interested in its progress, and she fondly appreciates her many friends. She said my life has been full of ____ experiences, ___ with all. I have been happy and had many blessings, and the sunshine of God's love is in my heart and over my life's pathway. I pray that the world may be brought to Christ and that my dear family and relatives, & friends & acquaintances may all love God and lead a better Christian life than I have, and that all may meet me in Heaven, where all is joy."
